This
morning we had a 6 am wake-up call and were on buses by 7:30 for
a trip up to the Briksdal Glacier. This is a very popular site and
we wanted to get there before the other cruise ships and tourists.
After a beautiful 45 minute drive from the town of Olden into the
valley along a glaciel lake, we were unloaded at the parking area
of the Jostedalsbreen National Park. We loaded into troll carts
(small 6 passenger open air electric vehicles) for the 2 mile ride
up to the the turquoise blue lake formed by the Briksdal glacier.
We then walked another 1/2 mile to the base of the glacier. The
sun was just peaking through the mist but as we wandered around,
the sun came out and the top of the glacier appeared. Besides the
glacier, there were huge waterfalls cascading down steep snow capped
mountains that surrounded us. We decided to walk back down to enjoy
the beautiful views. As we were leaving, bus loads of people were
just arriving. We were very glad to have gotten to the area early
and to have had it to ourselves.
