The Lofoton Islands are known for their cod fishing and isolated islands with large nesting colonies of seabirds.

Reine - a picturesque fishing village that was one of the historic cod fishing locations.

Cod drying racks were everywhere around the village.
In the winter, cod come into the area and fisherpeople catch them and drape them over the racks to dry.
Cod fishing is still a viable and important industry in the area.
The heads are dried separately from the rest of the fish.

We were lucky to see people cutting down the fish for shipment
One person sits on top of the racks and cuts the string holding the cod. The people below pick them up and stack them in bins.
These are hauled to the harbor for loading on to a ship. Brazil is one of the major countries importing the dried cod.

Trollfjord

The crew served us hot mulled wine while we watched the captain turn the ship around in the narrow fjord.
The ship got close enough to the edge of the fjord that one of our naturalists was able to pluck a leaf from the shoreline.
