On February 5, we made another pre-breakfast landing in Fortuna
Bay. Fortuna Bay features in the Shackleton saga because when he
hiked across the island from King Haakon Bay, he ended up here in
his search for the Stromness whaling station. He soon realized he
had missed it by a few miles and then continued walking over one
more pass, finally sighting the station.
We
took a fairly long walk inland on a glacially-formed plain to visit
a large king penguin colony. We were rewarded with a nice group
of "oakum boys" standing together on the other side of
a narrow meltwater river. However, the wind was quite strong and
the low cloud base dropped both rain and sleet on us during the
excursion, making for an unpleasant return trip.
