Ghana
was formerly called the Gold Coast while under British rule from
1896-1957. English is the official language but there are over 100
different ethnic groups, each with their own language. Ghana has
a population of about 24 million people. 68% of the people are Christian.
Ghana is the 2nd largest cocoa producer in the world.
We decided not to take a formal tour in Takoradi (expensive and
didn't sound that interesting.) Instead we took the ship provided
shuttle into the center of town and the Market Circle. It is as
big as a football stadium and houses booths and shops selling almost
everything. We walked around the perimeter, venturing a couple times
into some of the alleys. This was the main market for the people
of Takoradi and not designed for tourists.
Again women were walking around carrying huge loads on their heads
and babies wrapped around their backs. Very interesting to experience
but it was hot, humid, very crowded and smelly. We were glad to
get back to the air conditioned ship and a nice shower.
